GAS TURBINE EXPANSION JOINT

Colpro required an expansion joint between a turbine exhaust gas duct and silencer as part of their scope for a project in Papua New Guinea.

The requirements are summarised on the Joint Applications Data Sheet which is drawn up for each expansion joint that we supply. For the Colpro application:

• Inlet design temperature - 550°C.
• Design pressure - 5kPa.
• Fuelcomposition including natural gas and diesel with the possibility of sulphur in the gas.
• Inside duct dimensions - 1404mm x 864mm.
• Joint expansion requirements - 15mm axial and ±10mm lateral.
• Reference to TES arrangement drawing TESJ1266-001.

In order to ensure that the joint splicing and assembly was of the highest standard for the remote site, Colpro selected a cartridge design which could be works assembled and simply bolted between flanges at site.

The Copro expansion joint was custom designed to suit the application:

• Full traceability against TESApplications Data Sheet.
• Materials of construction 316 Stainless Steel for the high design temperature.
• Internal flow liner to ensure good flow conditions through the joint and to protect the fabric against the velocity of the gas.
• A heavy duty bolster of 1100 gsm Graflex encapsulating 100 kg/m³ Rockwool which provides insulation and sound attennuation.
• An outer membrane providing the gas sealing and designed for the full gas temperature without taking into account any benefit from the bolster:
  • Outer membrane of aramid reinforced silicon.
  • An internal layer of 120 micron glass reinforced PTFE to protect against sulphur attack of the Silicon.
  • Integral insulation comprising glass cloth, two layers of 12mm glass needlemat and an internal layer of graflex.
• Fully assembled complete with lifting brakets which compress the joint for installation and allow the assembly to be lifted into place.
• Crated for export.
